WASHINGTON (CHATNEWSTV) — The United States welcomed the release of 25 crew members from the MV Galaxy Leader on Thursday, thanking Oman for its “essential and timely efforts” in securing their freedom after over a year in Houthi detention.
The freed crew, hailing from Bulgaria, Mexico, the Philippines, Romania, and Ukraine, had been unlawfully held since the Houthis seized the vessel more than a year ago. The ship itself remains in Houthi possession.
“Houthi actions continue to endanger lives, disrupt humanitarian efforts, and harm regional economies,” the State Department said in a statement.
The U.S. condemned the ongoing detention of local UN, NGO, and diplomatic mission staff, including Yemeni employees of the U.S. government, and called on the Houthis to halt attacks in the Red Sea and release all detainees.
“The Houthis must cease their unlawful activities and respect international laws governing maritime security and human rights,” the statement added.
