ABUJA, Nigeria — No fewer than 40 people are feared trapped after a building under construction collapsed Saturday in the Sabon Lugbe area of Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). The incident occurred around 5 p.m., with many victims still inside, according to local reports.
Eyewitnesses on social media platform X shared videos of residents frantically digging through the rubble to reach those trapped below. “No fewer than 40 persons are currently trapped in a building collapse… People are under this rubble,” said an eyewitness who asked to remain anonymous. “We are calling on the government and relevant agencies to come and rescue those who are trapped here.”
Local security forces have arrived at the scene to support rescue operations and prevent any looting attempts by criminals. The incident follows several recent building collapses in Nigeria, including one in the Kubwa area of Abuja, where four individuals were rescued from a residential structure that partially collapsed last month.
In Lagos, a similar incident occurred two weeks ago on Amusu Street, Orile Iganmu, where a two-story building collapsed due to structural age. Although all occupants escaped without injury, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency official Damilola Oke-Osanyitolu noted that residents had previously been advised to evacuate due to safety concerns.
