The British Government has awarded Chevening and Commonwealth scholarships to 82 Nigerian students for the 2024 academic year. These scholarships will allow the recipients to pursue master’s and PhD programs in the United Kingdom.
According to a statement from the British High Commission in Abuja, 32 Nigerians were selected for the Chevening scholarships, while 50 were awarded Commonwealth scholarships. The selection process for these scholarships is highly competitive, and a pre-departure ceremony was held in Abuja for scholars from the capital and surrounding regions. Another ceremony is scheduled to take place in Lagos, where Deputy Head of Mission, Abby Bernard, will host scholars from Lagos and nearby cities.
During the Abuja event, British Deputy High Commissioner Gill Lever congratulated the scholars and emphasized the UK’s commitment to supporting Nigeria’s educational development. She encouraged the recipients to excel in their studies, serve as ambassadors for Nigeria, and use their experiences to drive positive change upon their return.
Idowu Akintade, Director of Operations at the British Council Nigeria, also urged the scholars to build strong networks and contribute to Nigeria’s development priorities. He highlighted the significance of the scholarships in preparing the scholars to make a positive impact in their home country.
Chevening and Commonwealth Scholarships are awarded to individuals who demonstrate intellectual ability, leadership potential, and a commitment to the development of their home country. Nigeria boasts a large alumni base with over 4,500 individuals, including 3,000 Commonwealth and 1,500 Chevening alumni, many of whom have made significant contributions to Nigeria’s development.
