German Foreign Minister Baerbock To Strengthen Ties In Southeast Asia Tour

German Foreign Minister Baerbock, on the eve of her departure for a diplomatic tour encompassing the Philippines, Malaysia, and Singapore, articulated her vision for enhanced cooperation and understanding between Germany and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) countries.

Despite the geographical distance of more than 10,000 kilometers, Baerbock emphasized the palpable economic momentum in Southeast Asia and its strategic significance globally. She underscored the shared commitment to clear rules in international interactions, a sentiment echoed by Germany and the ASEAN nations.

The South China Sea, a region at the epicenter of global growth, faces increasing challenges to the rules-based international order. China’s assertiveness in claiming extensive sea areas near other coastal states raises concerns about the freedom of shipping routes, security of supply chains, and global economic development. Baerbock emphasized the importance of maintaining a focus on international law while exploring diplomatic initiatives, détente, and dispute resolution to prevent the situation from escalating into a global storm.

During her visit, Baerbock expressed her intent to explore how Germany could contribute to initiatives organized by ASEAN partners. Germany is already assisting the Philippine coastguard in maritime security efforts, and there is a shared commitment to closer collaboration in climate action. The cooperation between skilled workers also holds significant potential, with thousands of Philippine care workers making vital contributions in Germany.

Malaysia, identified as Germany’s most significant trading partner in Southeast Asia, holds a key position as an investment location for German enterprises. Baerbock aims to understand Malaysia’s perspective on the Middle East conflict and share Germany’s position. In Singapore, a global infrastructure hub and vital to Germany’s export economy, the Foreign Minister sees an opportunity to strengthen ties with a city-state that acts as a bridge-builder with its globally minded outlook and close relations with China.

As Baerbock embarks on her Southeast Asia tour, she envisions building bridges with the region, fostering diplomatic relationships, and cementing Germany’s commitment to collaboration in the face of global challenges. The visit is not only a diplomatic mission but also an opportunity for mutual learning and growth between nations.
