The European Union (EU) expressed its strong support for United Nations Security Council resolution 2722, adopted on 10th January.
The resolution vehemently condemns the ongoing Houthi attacks on Red Sea shipping, emphasizing the crucial need to uphold freedom of navigation in the region.
In a statement released on Friday, the block underscores the significance of maintaining open access to the Red Sea, not only for the smooth flow of global commerce but also for regional security. Citing UNSC resolution 2722, the EU emphasizes that states possess the right to defend their vessels against such attacks, in adherence to international law.
Highlighting the detrimental impact of Houthi attacks on global commerce and the compromise of navigational rights, the EU echoes the UN Security Council’s demand for an immediate cessation of these activities. The EU urges the Houthi group to exercise restraint to prevent any further escalation in the Red Sea and the broader region.
In the context of regional stability, the EU recalls the obligation of all states to adhere to the arms embargo outlined in the UN Security Council resolution 2216 (2015).
The EU, committed to contributing to regional stability, affirms its dedication to ensuring the cessation of Houthi attacks and fostering an environment conducive to peace and security in the Red Sea and surrounding areas.
