Estonian PM Kaja Kallas Spearheads Efforts for €50 Billion Aid Package and Military Assistance for Ukraine at European Council

Stenbock House, 31 January 2024 – Prime Minister Kaja Kallas is set to play a pivotal role in the upcoming European Council meeting in Brussels, starting Thursday, with a primary focus on establishing a robust €50 billion financial assistance package for Ukraine over the next four years. This initiative aims to provide vital grants and loans to support Ukraine in its ongoing struggle.

Expressing her optimism, Prime Minister Kallas emphasized the collective effort required from all member states to secure approval for the substantial aid package. “I very much hope that together with all member states we will be able to approve a €50 billion financial assistance package for Ukraine,” stated the prime minister.

In addition to financial aid, the discussions will also center around the continuation of military assistance to Ukraine. Prime Minister Kallas stressed the significance of intensifying efforts by EU member states to send weapons and ammunition. “A common goal and a guarantee of long-term assistance would trigger a strategic shift towards victory for Ukraine,” she added.

Prime Minister Kallas will kick off her engagements in Brussels on Wednesday by attending a ceremony commemorating Jacques Lucien Jean Delors, the esteemed French politician, and economist, who served as the former President of the European Commission. Furthermore, the prime minister is scheduled to hold crucial meetings with Polish Prime Minister Donalt Tusk and Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte during her visit.

The European Council meeting is anticipated to be a critical juncture in determining the extent of the EU’s support for Ukraine in both financial and military aspects. Prime Minister Kallas’s active participation underscores Estonia’s commitment to fostering solidarity and assistance within the European community, particularly in times of geopolitical challenges.
