Homeland Security Secretary Mayorkas Applauds Bipartisan National Security Agreement in the U.S. Senate

WASHINGTON – Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro N. Mayorkas has released a statement applauding the bipartisan national security agreement in the U.S. Senate. He emphasized the significance of this agreement, stating, “The bipartisan agreement in the Senate is tough, fair, and takes meaningful steps to address the challenges our country faces after decades of Congressional inaction.”

Mayorkas highlighted key aspects of the agreement, stating, “It would allow DHS to remove more quickly those who do not establish a legal basis to remain in the United States, reducing the time from years to months.” He further noted the expediting of protection and work authorization for individuals with legitimate claims, demonstrating the commitment to a more efficient immigration process.

The Secretary underscored the flexibility the agreement provides to respond to changing dynamics at the border, including the temporary prohibition of border entries for certain individuals when encounters are extremely high. Additionally, Mayorkas emphasized the allocation of much-needed resources to support and expand the DHS workforce after decades of chronic underfunding.

The statement outlined a commitment to investing in technology, specifically targeting the prevention of fentanyl from entering the country at ports of entry. Mayorkas stated, “It also delivers much-needed resources to support and expand the DHS workforce after decades of chronic underfunding, and it further invests in technology to help prevent fentanyl from entering our country at ports of entry.”

While acknowledging that the proposed legislation does not address all issues within the immigration system, Mayorkas stressed its essential role in making the border more secure, orderly, fair, and humane. He expressed gratitude to the bipartisan group of senators involved in crafting the legislation, describing it as a product of extensive negotiations and conversations.

Mayorkas concluded by urging Congress to pass this bipartisan legislation promptly, stating, “I call on Congress to pass this bipartisan legislation, give the DHS workforce the tools and resources we need, and provide solutions that increase our border security.” He emphasized the urgency of implementing the new enforcement tools and resources to strengthen the ability to enforce the law in the coming months and years.
