Protest Erupts in Minna as Residents Decry Soaring Cost of Living

Minna, Niger State – February 5, 2024 – Residents of Minna, the capital of Niger State, took to the streets on Monday to protest against the exorbitant cost of living in the country, resulting in the blockade of major roads within the metropolis. The demonstrators, comprising women and youths, voiced their grievances through protest songs, drawing attention to the increasing prices of essential goods.

Despite the visible presence of security agents, including the police, the protesters remained resolute in their demand for government intervention to alleviate the economic challenges faced by citizens. The rising costs of food items, coupled with what the protesters perceived as insufficient government efforts, prompted them to stage a public demonstration.

Speaking to the gathered protesters, Deputy Governor Yakubu Garba acknowledged the distress and hardships experienced by families due to the current economic conditions. He assured the crowd that the government is fully cognizant of the situation and is actively working to mitigate the challenges.

Deputy Governor Garba specifically mentioned the government’s commitment to addressing the consequences of the recent petrol subsidy removal, emphasizing ongoing efforts to reduce the overall cost of living. He urged the residents to exercise patience while assuring them that the government is prioritizing measures to bring relief to households grappling with economic strains.

The protest in Minna underscores the growing frustration among citizens regarding the economic pressures faced on a daily basis. As the government acknowledges the concerns raised by the demonstrators, the focus remains on implementing tangible solutions to alleviate the financial burdens on households and ensure a more sustainable and equitable economic environment.
