U.S.-Nigeria Air Transport Agreement Enters into Force

ABUJA, Nigeria, May 17, 2024 – The U.S.-Nigeria Air Transport Agreement, which has been provisionally applied since 2000, officially entered into force on May 13, 2024. This bilateral agreement marks a significant advancement in the civil aviation relationship between the two nations, aligning with the U.S. Open Skies international aviation policy and emphasizing high standards of aviation safety and security.

The agreement introduces provisions for unrestricted capacity and frequency of services, open route rights, a liberal charter regime, and open code-sharing opportunities. These measures aim to foster a more dynamic and competitive aviation market between the United States and Nigeria.

A spokesperson from the U.S. Embassy in Nigeria stated, “This agreement with Nigeria is a step forward in liberalizing the international civil aviation sector in Africa and further expands our strong economic and commercial partnership.” The agreement is anticipated to strengthen people-to-people ties and create new opportunities for airlines, travel companies, and customers.

By enabling air carriers to offer more affordable, convenient, and efficient services, the agreement is expected to boost tourism and commerce between the two countries. It will also enhance the connectivity and economic integration of Nigeria within the global aviation network.

The U.S.-Nigeria Air Transport Agreement exemplifies the commitment of both nations to fostering a robust and secure aviation environment, promoting mutual economic growth, and facilitating greater interaction among their citizens.
