ABIA STATE, NIGERIA – A young Nigerian lady, known only as Miss Ocheze, tragically lost her life in a workplace incident at Inner Galaxy Company in Abia State on Monday, 20th May, 2024.
Miss Ocheze, an employee at the recycling company, was reportedly pushed from a crane by her Chinese boss, leading to her immediate death. The Inner Galaxy Company, where the incident occurred, is located in Umuahala village in the Ukwa West local government area of Abia State. Miss Ocheze was a native of this community.
Following the incident, the youths of Umuahala community staged a protest at the company, demanding justice for Miss Ocheze. However, their peaceful demonstration was met with intimidation by soldiers tasked with safeguarding the facility.
Mr Boniface Nwaigwe, the Secretary General of Asa Development Union, confirmed the unfortunate incident and added that military operatives shot one of the protesting youths. The victim is currently in critical condition.
When contacted for a statement, Ferdinand Ekeoma, the spokesman for Governor Alex Otti, claimed ignorance of the incident. “I’m not aware of the incident,” Ekeoma said.
The community continues to seek justice for Miss Ocheze, and this tragic incident has highlighted the urgent need for improved workplace safety measures.
