In the ancient city of Kano, confusion reigns as two contending Emirs – the reinstated Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II and the dethroned Emir Aminu Ado Bayero – have both announced plans to lead Jumaat prayers at the Palace Central Mosque this Friday.
Emir Malam Muhammadu Sanusi II, who resides closer to the mosque, is anticipated to lead the two rakat Friday prayers. Historically, Emir Sanusi II has performed the Jumaat Prayers at the Palace Central Mosque during his previous tenure as Emir of the city.
A statement released on Thursday night by Danburan Kano, Munir Sanusi Bayero, affirmed, “The reinstated Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II has been saddled with the responsibility to lead the Jumaat Prayers on Friday.” The statement further invited Kano residents to attend and listen to the sermon to be delivered by Emir Sanusi II.
Conversely, a conflicting statement from an aide of the deposed Emir, Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero, invited residents to join him at the Emir’s Palace Friday Mosque for the same prayers. The statement noted that the movement to the Emir’s Palace Mosque would commence at 12:30 pm.
As the situation develops, the police have yet to comment on the potential for conflict or any security measures being taken.
The residents of Kano are left in a state of uncertainty, torn between the two emirs’ calls, as the time for the Jumaat prayers approaches.
