Enugu Gov’t Alerts Residents On Cholera Outbreak

The Enugu State government has alerted residents of the state on the outbreak of Cholera in Nigeria, urging them to be vigilant and observe necessary preventive measures.

In a public service announcement signed by the Commissioner for Health, Prof. Obi Emmanuel Ikechukwu, the State government alerted the residents that though there’s no reported case in Enugu yet, several parts of the country are already affected.

Prof. Ikechukwu highlighted the need “to stay informed and take preventive measures to protect ourselves and our community.”

The announcement reads in part:

What is Cholera? Cholera is an acute diarrheal infection caused by the bacterium Vibrio cholerae. It spreads through contaminated food and water, especially during floods or inadequate sanitation conditions.

Key Facts:

Affected States: Approximately 30 states in Nigeria are currently affected including States surrounding Enugu State.

Confirmed Cases: Enugu State has not reported any confirmed cases yet.

Preventive Measures: We must remain vigilant and take the following precautions:

1.Boil or treat drinking water to ensure its safety.
2.Wash hands frequently with soap and clean running water.
3. Avoid consuming raw or undercooked food.
4. Cook food thoroughly.
5. Avoid street food or food from unhygienic sources.
6. Wash fruits and vegetables properly.

7. Educate your family, friends, and neighbors about cholera prevention.
8. Report any symptoms promptly (diarrhea, vomiting, dehydration) to health authorities nearest to you.
9. If you experience symptoms (severe diarrhea, vomiting, dehydration), seek medical attention immediately.

Cholera can be treated effectively if detected early.

Remember, prevention is our best defense against cholera. Let’s work together to keep our community safe. Enugu State Ministry of Health has pre-positioned drugs and consumables to contain the outbreak in case it comes to Enugu State.
