Keir Starmer Delivers Inaugural Speech as Prime Minister, Emphasizes Unity and Service

"Whether you voted Labour or not, in fact, especially if you did not, I say to you directly - My government will serve you. Politics can be a force for good. We will show that."

On July 5, 2024, Keir Starmer stood on the steps of Downing Street to deliver his first speech as Prime Minister, marking a new era for the United Kingdom. Fresh from Buckingham Palace, where he accepted an invitation from His Majesty the King to form a new government, Starmer spoke with a tone of unity and dedication to public service.

In his address, Starmer began by acknowledging the contributions of his predecessor, Rishi Sunak. He paid tribute to Sunak’s groundbreaking achievement as the first British Asian Prime Minister and the dedication he demonstrated during his tenure. “His achievement as the first British Asian Prime Minister of our country… The extra effort that will have required… Should not be underestimated by anyone,” Starmer stated.

Starmer’s speech focused heavily on the need for national renewal and a return to genuine public service. “Our country has voted, decisively, for change. For national renewal. And a return of politics to public service,” he declared. He emphasized that the significant gap between the sacrifices of the people and the service they receive from politicians has led to a “weariness in the heart of a nation.”

Addressing the issue of public trust, Starmer acknowledged the need for actions rather than words to heal this rift. He committed to treating every individual with respect and ensuring his government serves all citizens, regardless of their political choices. “My government will serve you. Politics can be a force for good – we will show that,” he promised.

Starmer also highlighted the importance of addressing long-standing issues of insecurity and neglect faced by many working individuals. “Nurses, builders, drivers, carers… People doing the right thing… Working harder than ever… Their lives are ignored. I want to say very clearly to those people – not this time,” he vowed.

The new Prime Minister outlined his vision for Britain’s future, pledging to rebuild the nation with wealth generated in every community, a revitalized NHS, secure borders, safer streets, and dignity and respect in the workplace. He also committed to promoting clean energy and reducing energy bills permanently. “Brick by brick, we will rebuild the infrastructure of opportunity… The world-class schools and colleges… The affordable homes that I know are the ingredients of hope for working people,” he articulated.

Starmer concluded his speech with a call for unity and collective effort in the face of global challenges. “Four nations… Standing together again… Facing down, as we have so often in our past… The challenges of an insecure world… Committed – to a calm and patient rebuilding,” he urged.

In closing, he invited the nation to join his government in the mission of national renewal, promising an unyielding commitment to serve the public’s interests and restore respect to politics. “Our work is urgent, and we begin it today,” Starmer concluded with resolve.
