Estonian PM, Kristen Michal’s New Government Sworn In With 7 Women Ministers

Stenbock House, 23 July 2024 – The new government of Prime Minister Kristen Michal officially took office today, pledging to prioritize national security, economic growth, and social equity. The first sitting and cabinet meeting are scheduled for Thursday, 25 July.

Prime Minister Kristen Michal was sworn in at the Riigikogu on Tuesday morning, marking the commencement of his term. Following Michal’s oath, the other members of his cabinet also signed the oath of office. Notably absent from the ceremony was Minister of Defence Hanno Pevkur, currently on an official visit to the United States. The duties of the Minister of Defence will temporarily be handled by the Minister of Finance.

After the swearing-in ceremony, Prime Minister Michal met with outgoing Prime Minister Kaja Kallas and the staff of the Government Office.

“I am honored to lead this government and am committed to working tirelessly for the betterment of our nation,” Michal stated.

The new administration, which is the 54th government of the Republic of Estonia, includes 14 ministers. Several members from the previous government have retained their positions, ensuring continuity and stability.

These include Margus Tsahkna (Minister of Foreign Affairs), Hanno Pevkur (Minister of Defence), Piret Hartman (Minister of Regional Affairs and Agriculture), Lauri Läänemets (Minister of the Interior), Signe Riisalo (Minister of Social Protection), Riina Sikkut (Minister of Health), Kristina Kallas (Minister of Education and Research), and Heidy Purga (Minister of Culture). New appointments include Liisa-Ly Pakosta (Minister of Justice and Digital Affairs), Yoko Alender (Minister of Climate), Vladimir Svet (Minister of Infrastructure), Erkki Keldo (Minister of Economic Affairs and Industry), and Jürgen Ligi (Minister of Finance).

The coalition government, formed by the Estonian Reform Party, the Social Democratic Party, and Eesti 200, has set clear priorities.

“Our goal is to ensure the security of Estonia, foster economic growth, and address social and regional inequalities,” Michal emphasized. “We are committed to the financial sustainability of the state.”

The government will convene for its inaugural sitting at 10 a.m. on Thursday, 25 July, followed by a cabinet meeting.
