Iconic Singer Onyeka Onwenu Dies at 72

 

Veteran Nigerian singer, songwriter, and actress Ms. Onyeka Onwenu has passed away at the age of 72. Reports indicate that the legendary artist died on Tuesday night after performing at an event in Banana Island, Lagos.

Onwenu reportedly collapsed following her performance at the birthday celebration of Stella Okoli, owner of Emzor Pharmaceuticals. She was later pronounced dead at a hospital in Victoria Island, according to The Guardian Newspaper. Her family has not yet confirmed her death.

In addition to her illustrious career in the arts, Onyeka Onwenu also made significant contributions to politics. She served as the chairperson of the Imo State Council for Arts and Culture and was the Director-General of the National Centre for Women Development.

Born in 1952 in Obosi, Anambra State, Nigeria, Onwenu began her music career in the 1980s, releasing her debut album, “For the Love of You,” in 1981. She released numerous albums and singles over the years, including the hit song “One Love.” Onwenu also starred in several Nollywood films and received numerous awards for her contributions to music and film, establishing herself as one of the pioneers of Nigerian music.

Beyond entertainment, Onwenu was actively involved in politics. In 2013, she was appointed Chairperson of the Imo State Council for Arts and Culture, and in 2016, she became the Director-General of the National Centre for Women Development.

Onwenu’s contributions to Nigerian society have been widely recognized. In 2011, she was awarded the National Honors of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR). She has also been celebrated as one of the most influential women in Nigeria by various organizations.
