Heavy Security Presence As Lagos Demonstrators Rally Against Economic Hardship

Lagos, Nigeria – The anticipated nationwide protests against economic hardship and hunger began early Thursday morning, originating from the Ikeja Under-bridge in Lagos. Demonstrators, voicing discontent over the economic policies of President Bola Tinubu’s administration, were accompanied by a significant security presence, including armed personnel and armored vehicles.

Despite earlier threats from unknown individuals and traditionalist groups warning against participating in the protests, a large crowd of protesters gathered at the Ikeja Under-bridge. They marched towards the Alausa Secretariat, passing through key areas like the Allen Roundabout, and planned to converge at Gani Fawehinmi Park in Ojota and Freedom Park in Ketu.

While the protest was visibly active in these areas, the situation at the Lekki Tollgate remained calm, with no protesters reported on the ground at the time of this report. However, a substantial deployment of armed security forces and armored tanks was observed, indicating a readiness to maintain order.

In contrast, the affluent areas of Ikoyi and Victoria Island experienced relative calm, with no significant protest activity. Additionally, a pro-government group gathered at the Lagos State Government Secretariat in Alausa, Ikeja, expressing their support for the current administration amidst the rising tensions.

The protest reflects widespread frustration among Nigerians over the country’s economic conditions, and the heavy security presence underscores the government’s concern about maintaining peace and order during these demonstrations.
