The Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Ogun State, Mr Niyi Ijalaye, has died.
He reportedly collapsed after a meeting at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) headquarters in Abuja.
A source close to the Ogun INEC, who doesn’t want to be quoted, revealed that Ijalaye had returned to his hotel room after the meeting before the fatal incident occurred.
The meeting, presided over by INEC Chairman Mahmood Yakubu, focused on the upcoming off-cycle governorship elections in Edo and Ondo States, as well as discussions regarding seven vacant positions in the National and State Assemblies.
According to reports, Mr. Ijalaye had been in good spirits and actively participated in the discussions during the meeting.
Niyi Ijalaye, an indigene of Ondo State, was respected for his commitment to the electoral process. His sudden death has left many in shock, particularly those who interacted with him earlier in the day.
INEC is yet to issue an official statement in respect to the development.
