Gaza is the “Deadliest Place in the World to Be a Child,” Says UK at UN Security Council

Gaza has become the deadliest place in the world to be a child, according to a stark statement made by Ambassador James Kariuki, the UK Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations, during a UN Security Council meeting on Thursday. Speaking in New York, Ambassador Kariuki highlighted the devastating toll the ongoing conflict has taken on Gaza’s youngest residents.

“Women and children continue to bear the brunt of this brutal conflict that since October 7 has killed over 40,000 people. Children account for nearly a third of identified casualties. We call on Israel to take all possible steps to avoid civilian casualties,” Kariuki stated.

The Ambassador also expressed deep concern over the 100 hostages still held by Hamas in Gaza, emphasizing the urgency of their release. “Time is running out for them as they remain in captivity subject to unimaginable horror. We call again for their immediate and unconditional release.”

Kariuki further warned of a looming health crisis in Gaza, where over 640,000 children under the age of 10 are at risk of a devastating polio outbreak. “Gaza stands on the precipice of a polio outbreak… Another deadly threat to a people already facing a multitude of deadly threats,” he said, urging all parties to ensure safe and unhindered access to aid and vaccinations.

The UK also condemned ongoing settler violence in the West Bank and called for immediate action against extremists. “The violence in the Palestinian village of Jit last week was abhorrent. We call on Israel to take action against these extremists,” Kariuki said, underscoring the UK’s commitment to holding those responsible accountable.

In closing, Ambassador Kariuki reiterated the UK’s call for an immediate ceasefire and the importance of ongoing negotiations to end the conflict, secure the release of hostages, and address the worsening humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
