Music Icon Onyeka Onwenu to Be Laid to Rest Today in Lagos

Nigeria’s celebrated music icon, Onyeka Onwenu, affectionately known as the “Elegant Stallion,” will be laid to rest today, Friday, in Lagos. Onwenu, who passed away on July 30, 2024, at the age of 72, died at Reddington Hospital, Ikeja, after collapsing at an event honoring Dr. Stella Okoli, the Managing Director of Emzor Pharmaceuticals.

The funeral service, as announced by her family, will be held at the Fountain of Life Church in Ilupeju, followed by a private burial at a vault in Ikoyi, according to CKN News. The funeral flyer indicates that the Service of Songs is scheduled to take place from 10 AM to 12 noon, with the burial set for 2 PM to 4 PM.

Onyeka Onwenu was more than just a gifted musician with a legacy of numerous hits; she was also a respected broadcaster, actress, politician, and activist. Her multifaceted career spanned several decades, earning her a revered place in Nigeria’s cultural and political landscape.

Onwenu is survived by her two sons, who, along with her countless admirers, mourn the loss of a true Nigerian icon.
