On International Democracy Day, USAID Calls for Global Efforts to Uphold Democratic Values

WASHINGTON (ChatnewsTV) — As the world marks International Day of Democracy, USAID issued a call for collective responsibility in safeguarding democratic values, emphasizing that “democracy is the responsibility of us all.” The agency stressed the ongoing fight for freedom and representation around the world, with many communities still striving to shape their destinies in the face of oppressive regimes.

A 2023 survey of 30 countries found that 86 percent of respondents desire to live in a democracy. “More citizens are participating in civic life through political engagement, grassroots organizing, and other forms of nonviolent collective action,” USAID noted, highlighting the courage of those who risk their lives to demand justice and equity.

Since its founding in 1961, USAID has supported global movements for freedom, working with governments to root out corruption, increase transparency, and hold free and fair elections. “Our work is vital at a time when democracy faces historic headwinds,” the agency remarked, pointing to authoritarian governments and malign actors who undermine democratic institutions for personal gain.

“Our new Democracy, Rights, and Governance Policy provides a strategic blueprint for addressing modern threats to democracy,” USAID said, reaffirming its commitment to standing with democratic movements around the world.
