Jonathan Urges INEC, Security Agencies to Ensure Neutrality in Edo Governorship Election

ABUJA, Nigeria (ChatnewsTV) — Former President Goodluck Jonathan has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security agencies to maintain neutrality and provide a level playing field in the upcoming Edo State governorship election, scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 21.

In a statement issued Thursday by his media adviser, Ikechukwu Eze, Jonathan emphasized that only impartiality can guarantee a free and fair election.

“Loss of confidence in an election encourages political disputes, social unrest, voter apathy, increased polarization, and other far-reaching consequences that could undermine development and democratic consolidation,” Jonathan said.

The former president also urged political actors to focus on maintaining peace and security before, during, and after the election. He noted that the outcome of the polls places a “moral burden” on INEC and the police to rise to their constitutional responsibilities as impartial arbiters.

“As citizens of voting age in Edo State go to the polls… I call on all political actors and stakeholders to work towards deepening the nation’s democracy by prioritizing peace and security of the state,” Jonathan added.

He stressed that for democracy to thrive, elections must be free from manipulation and state institutions must ensure a peaceful, credible, and transparent process. Jonathan also reminded the public of the importance of protecting the integrity of civil rule, which has endured in Nigeria’s Fourth Republic for 25 years.

“Politicians must pursue their interests within the confines of the law and refrain from activities that could undermine the peace and stability of the state,” he said.
