WASHINGTON (ChatnewsTV) — The United States announced a new $5.55 billion military aid package for Ukraine on Wednesday, marking another surge in support for Kyiv amid its ongoing conflict with Russia. The assistance, authorized by President Joe Biden, is designed to bolster Ukraine’s defense capabilities as it seeks to regain control of territory seized by Russian forces.
Secretary of State Antony Blinken confirmed the news in a statement, emphasizing the U.S.’s long-term commitment to aiding Ukraine in its struggle. “We are taking this step to ensure this authority does not expire and the United States can fully utilize the funding appropriated by Congress,” Blinken said, referring to the Ukraine Security Supplemental Appropriations Act, 2024.
The aid, drawn from existing Department of Defense (DoD) stocks, will include defense articles and services to help Ukraine’s military maintain and enhance its position on the battlefield. With this new tranche of assistance, the U.S. seeks to ensure that Ukraine is equipped to defend its sovereignty against Russia’s aggression.
Blinken stressed that bipartisan support in Congress has been instrumental in enabling these aid efforts. “These drawdowns have been made possible by strong bipartisan support from Congress,” he added, highlighting the united front in Washington on backing Ukraine.
The announcement comes just days before the September 30 expiration of the 2024 Presidential Drawdown Authority, which has been a critical mechanism for providing military aid to Ukraine throughout the year. The funds are part of the remaining authority under the Ukraine Security Supplemental Appropriations Act, ensuring that the full scope of assistance allocated for Ukraine is utilized.
“As President Biden has made clear, the United States and the international coalition we have assembled will continue to stand with Ukraine,” Blinken said, reiterating the administration’s determination to support Kyiv in its fight against Russia. He further emphasized that the goal remains a “just, lasting, and comprehensive peace” for Ukraine.
This latest announcement underscores the U.S.’s ongoing strategy of strengthening Ukraine’s military to counter Russian forces, while maintaining a diplomatic push for a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
