KANO, Nigeria (Sept. 29, 2024) — Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State officially launched the 2024 Polio Eradication campaign in the Dawakin Kudu Local Government Area on Saturday, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to fighting the polio virus and other childhood diseases.
The campaign, which aims to vaccinate all eligible children in Kano, is part of efforts to strengthen immunity and prevent the virus’s spread, particularly as the state remains one of Nigeria’s 18 high-risk areas. This was stated by the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, in an official release.
In his address, Yusuf emphasized the government’s resolve to intensify vaccination programs and collaborate with health agencies and local communities to ensure no child is left unvaccinated.
“Since Nigeria’s certification as a polio-free nation in August 2020, Kano has remained vigilant,” Yusuf said. “We are committed to maintaining surveillance and ensuring routine immunization to protect our children.”
The governor also called on parents to take advantage of the vaccination campaign and to prioritize hygiene and sanitation for the broader health of society.
Yusuf expressed gratitude to development partners, religious leaders, and the Emirate Councils for their continued support and assured them of his administration’s dedication to healthcare programs aimed at improving public welfare.
Deputy Governor Comrade Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, who chairs the State Task Force on Polio Eradication, praised the governor’s leadership. “The governor’s timely intervention and commitment are commendable,” Gwarzo said.
Meanwhile, Health Commissioner Dr. Abubakar Labaran Yusuf explained that Dawakin Kudu was selected for the campaign launch due to its low immunization rates and hard-to-reach communities, highlighting the need for focused efforts to close these gaps.
Representing the Emir of Kano, Malam Muhammadu Sanusi II, Dr. Bashir Muhammad Dankadai emphasized the importance of raising public awareness and urged households to embrace routine immunization as a crucial measure to safeguard future generations.
The 2024 campaign continues Kano’s efforts to protect its youngest citizens and maintain Nigeria’s hard-earned polio-free status.
