U.S Reflects on One-Year Anniversary of Deadly Hamas Attack

WASHINGTON—Marking the one-year anniversary of the October 7, 2023, attack, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken issued a statement Monday, mourning the more than 1,200 victims, including 46 Americans, who were killed by Hamas in what he described as “the largest massacre of Jews since the Holocaust.”

“Hamas also took 254 people hostage that day, including 12 Americans,” Blinken said. While four Americans were released through U.S.-negotiated efforts in November, four remain in captivity in Gaza, alongside an estimated 97 hostages from more than 25 nations. “Hamas should release these hostages immediately,” Blinken urged, stressing that the U.S. will continue to work tirelessly for their return.

The attack, which also included sexual assaults and other atrocities, triggered a year-long conflict that Blinken said has had “tragic consequences for the Palestinian people.” He called for a ceasefire to end the suffering on both sides and to secure the release of all remaining hostages.

Blinken condemned Hamas for its actions and denounced Iran’s support for terrorist groups in the region, calling on the international community to stand firm against terrorism and extremism.

“On this painful anniversary, the United States stands with Israel as it defends itself against terrorism,” Blinken concluded, reiterating the U.S. commitment to lasting peace and stability for both Israelis and Palestinians.
