PDP Governors Order Return to Status Quo Amid Internal Party Disputes

ABUJA — Governors elected under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have directed the party’s leadership to revert to the status quo, effectively resolving a recent internal crisis. The decision was made following a late-night meeting of the PDP governors, which concluded early Tuesday.

Bala Mohammed, Chairman of the PDP Governors Forum and Governor of Bauchi State, said that while disputes are inevitable within a political party, they are resolvable.

“There is no crisis. The governors, Board of Trustees (BoT), and the National Assembly caucus have agreed that the National Working Committee (NWC) should revert to the status quo,” Mohammed said after the meeting.

The decision nullifies all recent suspensions within the party. This means the reinstatement of suspended officers and that the acting National Chairman, Umar Damagum, will remain in his position.

Speaking on the matter, Damagum confirmed the resolution of the party’s internal rift. “The party is united, and no members of the NWC left before,” he said.

This development comes after a Federal High Court in Abuja last Friday restrained the PDP’s National Executive Committee (NEC) from removing Damagum as acting National Chairman. The court’s ruling followed a wave of suspensions and counter-suspensions that had rocked the party.

With the directive from the governors, the PDP looks set to move past the recent upheaval and refocus on its agenda ahead of future elections.
