Bill for Creation of Ogoja State Passes Second Reading in House of Representatives

A bill seeking the creation of Ogoja State has successfully passed its second reading in the House of Representatives on Thursday.

The bill, sponsored by Hon. Godwin Offiono and three other lawmakers, aims to amend the 1999 Constitution to create an additional state in the South-south region.

Presenting the motion during plenary, Hon. Offiono emphasized that the bill is rooted in the principles of fairness and equity. “The essence of this bill is rested on equity,” he stated, highlighting the need for balanced development in the region.

If passed into law, the creation of Ogoja State would bring the total number of states in the South-south region to seven.

The bill passed the second reading without opposition from members and has been referred to the House Committee on Constitution Review for further consideration.
