A former member of the House of Representatives, Farouk Lawan, has regained his freedom following the completion of his five-year jail term at Kuje Prison.
Lawan was convicted in 2021 for accepting a $500,000 bribe from businessman Femi Otedola, the Chairman of Zenon Petroleum and Gas Ltd.
In January, the Supreme Court upheld the judgment of the Court of Appeal, which had earlier affirmed Lawan’s conviction on count three of a three-count charge. The five-member panel of the apex court dismissed Lawan’s appeal in a unanimous judgment, with Justice Tijjani Abubakar delivering the lead judgment prepared by Justice John Okoro.
The court ruled that Lawan’s appeal lacked merit, confirming his five-year sentence.
A video on Tuesday showed Lawan walking free from Kuje prison after serving his sentence.
