U.S., Nigeria Establish Bilateral Liaison Group on Illicit Finance and Cryptocurrencies

The United States and Nigeria are strengthening their partnership to combat cybercrime and illicit financial activities, including those involving cryptocurrencies. In an effort to enhance collaboration on digital security and counter growing cyber threats, the two nations have launched a Bilateral Liaison Group on Illicit Finance and Cryptocurrencies.

The U.S. Department of Justice, in coordination with the Nigerian government, will work to build Nigeria’s capacity to investigate and prosecute cybercrime. This initiative is part of the U.S.’s broader strategy to promote safe and secure digital environments worldwide.

“The United States reaffirms its commitment to a close partnership with Nigeria,” said a spokesperson from the U.S. Department of State. “This group will help accelerate cooperation between both nations in tackling illicit financial activities, particularly those involving the increasingly complex world of cryptocurrencies.”

As cybercrime continues to evolve, both countries recognize the need for concerted efforts to curb the misuse of digital technologies. The liaison group will focus on strengthening Nigeria’s digital infrastructure and capacity for combating malicious cyber operations, cybercrime, and other digital threats that undermine economic stability.

This latest initiative further cements the long-standing partnership between the U.S. and Nigeria in maintaining global security and economic prosperity, particularly in the digital domain.

In its media note, the Office of the Spokesperson highlighted that both nations are committed to advancing global cybersecurity while ensuring that digital tools are not misused for illicit purposes. The group is expected to play a pivotal role in addressing these emerging challenges through cooperation, knowledge exchange, and coordinated enforcement actions.
