EU MEPs Warn Against China’s Distortion of History, International Law in Taiwan Strait

BRUSSELS (ChatnewsTV) — European lawmakers have condemned China’s continued military provocations against Taiwan, warning that any attempts to unilaterally alter the status quo in the Taiwan Strait will face decisive consequences. In a resolution passed Thursday by 432 votes in favor, 60 against, and 71 abstentions, Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) denounced China’s increasing aggression in the region, including its military exercises on October 14.

“China’s coercive measures to achieve unification contradict international law and will not be tolerated,” MEPs stated, rejecting any efforts to forcibly change the balance of power in the Indo-Pacific.

The resolution calls out China for distorting history and international rules, particularly in its interpretation of UN resolution 2758, which, according to the MEPs, does not take a position on Taiwan’s status. They also criticized China’s ongoing campaign to block Taiwan from participating in multilateral organizations, urging the EU and its member states to support Taiwan’s inclusion in bodies such as the World Health Organization and Interpol.

“Taiwan deserves meaningful participation in the international community,” said an MEP spokesperson. “It is time for the EU to push for Taiwan’s representation in global institutions where its voice is crucial.”

While the EU reaffirmed its commitment to the “One China” policy, the Parliament stressed that only Taiwan’s democratically elected government can represent the Taiwanese people internationally. MEPs voiced concern over China’s use of hostile disinformation to undermine Taiwan’s democracy.

The resolution also highlighted growing security risks due to China’s military build-up in the region. MEPs urged the EU and its member states to enhance their maritime capacities to counter the rising threat in the Taiwan Strait and South China Sea. Additionally, they expressed alarm over China’s closer military ties with Russia and condemned Beijing’s supply of equipment to Moscow.

“The EU must respond firmly to China’s increasing military investments, which not only endanger regional security but global stability as well,” the resolution concluded.
