Riots Erupt in Enugu After Police Officer Kills Popular Ogene Musician

ENUGU, Nigeria (ChatnewsTV) — Tensions soared in Enugu on Saturday following the killing of well-known Ogene musician Okezie Chikezie Mba, popularly known as Igbo Jah, allegedly by a police officer from the Anti-Cult Unit of the Enugu State Police Command.

Igbo Jah was reportedly shot on Friday night while leaving the Anti-Cult Unit’s headquarters after attending a gathering there, sources said. “He was immediately rushed to the hospital, where he was confirmed dead on arrival,” a source close to the incident reported.

Following the news of his death, enraged youths set bonfires and staged protests in the Obiagu and Asata areas of Enugu, demanding justice for the slain musician.

The Enugu State Police Command confirmed the incident, disclosing that an inspector from the Anti-Cultism Tactical Squad had been arrested and detained. According to the police statement issued by DSP Daniel Ndukwe, “The incident occurred around 8:10 p.m. on October 25, 2024, at the Tactical Squad’s Headquarters. The musician was reportedly leaving…when, for reasons yet to be ascertained, the police officer fired his rifle, hitting the victim.”

Ndukwe added that Enugu’s Commissioner of Police, CP Kanayo Uzuegbu, has ordered a “full-scale investigation that will facilitate prompt and appropriate disciplinary actions against the police officer.” Uzuegbu described the incident as “unacceptable” and expressed condolences to Igbo Jah’s family and associates.

“The Commissioner empathises and consoles the victim’s family, friends, and associates,” Ndukwe stated, urging calm among residents and assuring that “the police officer and anyone else found culpable will be sanctioned in line with the law to serve as a deterrent.”
