NNPP Sweeps Kano Local Government Elections, Wins All 44 Chairmanship and 484 Councillorship Seats

KANO, Nigeria — The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has emerged victorious in all 44 Local Government chairmanship seats and 484 councillorship seats in Kano State’s local government elections held on Saturday. This sweeping win aligns with recent election outcomes in other states where ruling parties secured all local government positions.

Announcing the results, the Chairman of the Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC), Prof. Sani Lawal Malumfashi, said six political parties—AA, AAC, Accord, ADC, APM, and NNPP—participated in the polls. He described the election as “largely peaceful in all ramifications” and noted high voter turnout across the state.

“Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC) has exercised and observed its constitutional mandates,” Malumfashi stated. “The exercise had been largely peaceful and successful in all ramifications… NNPP won all 44 Local Government Chairmanship and 484 Councillorship Positions contested.”

Malumfashi credited various stakeholders, including security agencies, political leaders, and community organizations, for their role in ensuring a smooth process. “The peaceful conduct of the exercise is a doubtless manifestation of public acceptability of the exercise in terms of credibility, fairness, and decency,” he added.

The elected officials are set to receive their certificates on Monday, solidifying the NNPP’s hold on Kano’s local governance.

NNPP’s total sweep mirrors recent trends in states like Imo, Sokoto, and Kwara, where ruling parties won every seat. In Imo, the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) secured all 305 councillorship and 27 chairmanship positions across the state. Similarly, in Sokoto, APC claimed all 23 local government chairmanships, with State Independent Electoral Commission Chairman Aliyu Suleiman confirming the results despite notable opposition absences.

With the NNPP’s resounding win, questions about electoral competitiveness and opposition participation continue to surface, reflecting the broader national pattern of ruling party dominance at the grassroots level.
