EU Sanctions Three Myanmar Military Affiliates, One Entity Over Scam Operations and Human Rights Violations

BRUSSELS (ChatnewsTV) — The European Union on Tuesday imposed sanctions on three individuals and one company in Myanmar linked to the military junta, targeting those behind scam operations that include serious human rights abuses and pose security threats in the region.

The sanctions, approved by the Council of the EU, list Chit Linn Myaing Group (CLM) and its founder, former Colonel Saw Chit Thu. CLM, a network of companies based near the Thai-Myanmar border, profits from scam compounds known for online fraud, drug trafficking, and human trafficking. The area, notably Shwe Kokko, is notorious for forced labor and torture, which the Council condemned as severe human rights violations.

Lieutenant Colonel Mote Thun and Major Tin Win, both affiliated with the Tatmadaw (Myanmar Armed Forces) and involved in scam operations near Myawaddy, were also sanctioned. “Today’s decision underscores the EU’s commitment to combating scam operations that fuel human rights abuses and destabilize Myanmar and the surrounding region,” the Council said in a statement.

These sanctions add to existing EU measures that freeze assets of those responsible for the 2021 military coup and prohibit travel to the EU. The action aligns with similar sanctions announced Tuesday by the United Kingdom and Canada, underscoring global pressure on Myanmar’s military authorities.

With these additions, the EU now has sanctions on 106 individuals and 22 entities associated with Myanmar’s junta, including an embargo on arms, communication monitoring equipment, and dual-use goods that could aid the military crackdown.
