Alex Ikwechegh Offers Public Apology and Vows to Support Police Investigation

Alex Ikwechegh, the member of the Abia House of Representatives who was captured on camera attacking a Bolt driver, has expressed regret for his behavior.

Ikwechegh acknowledged that his assault of Stephen Abuwatseya, a taxi driver, did not meet the standards required of someone in public service.

Ikwechegh threatened and assaulted the cab driver after they got into a fight when the driver was delivering a parcel. He had threatened to make the cab driver disappear from Nigeria.

Nigerians condemned the lawmakers actions in a video of the fight posted by social media critic Martins Ortse, also known as VeryDarkMan.

Additionally, the Nigeria Police Force revealed that it is taking care of the situation. In a statement released on Tuesday, Ikwechegh did, however, express regret for the hurt and humiliation his acts had caused Abuwatseya, his supporters, and the general public.

The law maker also pledged his support for the current inquiry into the matter and promised to cooperate with the police.

He said: “I, Honourable Alex Ikwechegh, Member of the House of Representatives, wish to address a deeply disturbing incident that occurred at my residence recently. A video has surfaced showing me engaging in unacceptable behavior towards an Uber driver who came to deliver a waybill for me. I am deeply sorry for my actions and acknowledge that they were unacceptable and unbecoming of a public official.

“As a public servant, I recognize the trust placed in me by my constituents and the Nigerian people. My behavior fell short of the standards expected of me, and for that, I am truly sorry. I understand that my actions have caused harm and embarrassment to the driver, my constituents and the nation at large.

“I want to assure the public that I am fully cooperating with the Nigeria Police investigation into this matter.

“As a public servant, I recognise the trust placed in me by my constituents and the Nigerian people. My behavior fell short of the standards expected of me, and for that, I am truly sorry.”
