U.S. Recognizes New Haitian Prime Minister as Country Faces Mounting Crises

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti — The United States has acknowledged the appointment of Alix Didier Fils-Aimé as Haiti’s new prime minister following a leadership transition overseen by Haiti’s Transitional Presidential Council (TPC). U.S. Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller released a statement on Tuesday emphasizing the U.S. commitment to working with the new prime minister and the TPC to address critical challenges facing the nation.

“The United States looks forward to working with newly appointed Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé and the TPC to advance progress against urgent priorities in the coming months,” Miller stated. He also expressed gratitude to former Prime Minister Garry Conille for his service.

The TPC has signaled plans to collaborate with Fils-Aimé on a joint action strategy aimed at enhancing security, governance, and setting the stage for free and fair elections. The U.S. has called for a clearly defined division of responsibilities between the TPC and the prime minister, encouraging measures to improve transparency and accountability.

Miller underscored the importance of prioritizing governance over individual political agendas, particularly given the escalating crises impacting Haiti, which include widespread violence, food shortages, and mass displacement. “The acute and immediate needs of the Haitian people mandate that the transitional government prioritize governance over the competing personal interests of political actors,” he said.

The United States reaffirmed its support for the Haitian people, who continue to endure unprecedented hardships amid the nation’s prolonged instability.
