ABUJA, Nigeria (ChatnewsTV) — A coalition of pro-democracy organizations, known as the Ondo Freedom Movement, has sharply criticized Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, for his comments regarding the upcoming governorship election in Ondo State. The group accused Wike of undermining efforts to ensure a fair electoral process, particularly those led by Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde.
In a Thursday statement issued in Abuja, Ayodele Idowu, Coordinator of the Ondo Freedom Movement, highlighted the work of Makinde and other leaders in supporting the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Agboola Ajayi. “Governor Makinde’s commitment to a free and fair election has been unwavering,” said Idowu. “He is advocating for a process where the people’s votes are genuinely respected.”
Wike’s recent remarks, including his comment, “I pity my friend Seyi who is there struggling to get a brother in the South West; he is doing all he can, I don’t know how it will work,” have sparked concerns over potential election manipulation. Idowu suggested that Wike’s statements add weight to fears about possible plans by the All Progressives Congress (APC) to influence the outcome in favor of its candidate, Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa.
“Our Movement stands ready to resist any such plots,” declared Idowu, reiterating the coalition’s commitment to ensuring a fair election on November 16. The group pledged full support for Makinde and the PDP’s Ajayi, calling the upcoming election a turning point for the state.
The Ondo Freedom Movement also urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to maintain the integrity of the election, warning the APC against any attempts to tamper with the voting process. The group advised Governor Aiyedatiwa to reconsider his candidacy, citing widespread discontent with his administration. “His tenure has been one of the worst in Ondo’s history,” Idowu claimed, urging voters to remain vigilant and peaceful as they exercise their democratic rights.
