Labour Party Suspends Senator Kevin Chukwu Over Alleged Insubordination and Anti-Party Activities

Senator representing Enugu East faces 90-day suspension from LP amid internal conflict.

ENUGU, Nigeria — The Labour Party (LP) has suspended Senator Kevin Chukwu, the current representative of Enugu East Senatorial Zone, citing allegations of anti-party activities and insubordination. The decision was announced by the party’s leadership in Chukwu’s local Amurri ward, Nkanu West Local Government Area.

In a letter addressed to the Enugu State Chairman of the Labour Party, the Amurri ward executives detailed the reasons behind the suspension. The letter, signed by Comrade Chika Okoh on behalf of the ward’s Executive Council, indicated that the suspension is effective for 90 days from the date of notification or when Chukwu receives the notice.

“We, the members of the Executive Council of the Labour Party, Amurri Ward, Nkanu West LGA, hereby formally notify you, Distinguished Senator Kelvin Chukwu, of your suspension from the Labour Party for a period of 90 days,” the letter reads.

“This resolution has been passed as a result of your acts of insubordination to the leadership of the party, your involvement in anti-party activities, and your failure to adhere to the party’s principles.”

The suspension comes amid accusations that Senator Chukwu has not complied with the Labour Party’s directives and has failed to respond to multiple requests for dialogue. According to the party’s leadership, Chukwu was given several opportunities to defend himself against the charges, but he did not make himself available.

“You have failed to avail yourself of the opportunity to be heard, despite several requests made to you in this regard,” the letter stated.

The party emphasized that Chukwu retains the right to appeal the decision in line with Labour Party’s constitutional guidelines. However, the suspension, which was reported to the Enugu State Chairman through the Local Government Chairman, remains in place pending further actions by the party’s leadership.

Senator Chukwu, who has yet to publicly respond to the suspension, represents Enugu East, a region of strategic importance to the Labour Party in the southeastern political landscape. The party’s leadership in the state has not yet issued a formal statement regarding the suspension, but the move by the ward executives has drawn attention from political analysts and stakeholders.
