BRASILIA (ChatnewsTV) — UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer met with Chinese President Xi Jinping today at the G20 Summit in Brazil, where the two leaders discussed global stability, economic cooperation, and the clean energy transition.
In their opening remarks, the Prime Minister emphasized the shared responsibility of the UK and China as members of both the G20 and the UN Security Council to work together towards a more stable and prosperous world. “Our two nations have a crucial role in shaping the global agenda, particularly on climate change and clean energy,” Starmer said.
The leaders also explored opportunities to deepen bilateral relations, focusing on trade, investment, health, education, and other areas of mutual interest. Starmer outlined the UK’s approach, stressing that it would remain “consistent, respectful, and pragmatic” in order to achieve shared goals.
On the topic of climate change, both leaders agreed that further action is needed to accelerate progress toward net zero. “Both the UK and China must continue to lead on the global clean power transition,” Starmer said, underlining the importance of cooperative efforts.
However, the conversation also touched on more contentious issues, with Starmer reiterating the UK’s commitment to addressing human rights concerns and geopolitical tensions. “We will always engage frankly and honestly on areas where our perspectives differ, including on Hong Kong, human rights, and Russia’s ongoing war in Ukraine,” the Prime Minister added.
The leaders agreed that Chancellor of the Exchequer, who will visit Beijing next year, would further discussions on economic and financial cooperation with Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng.
