Estonia Government Approves Snap Defense Exercise ‘Okas 24-2’ To Bolster Readiness

TALLINN, Estonia (CHATNEWSTV) — The Estonian government has approved “Okas 24-2,” a snap defense readiness exercise (SNAPEX) involving up to 250 reservists, to test the nation’s rapid response capabilities.

According to a statement released on Monday by the Estonian Prime Minister’s office, the exercise, running from Dec. 3 to 15, 2024, are part of Estonia’s commitment to preparedness despite no immediate security threat to the country.

“Exercise Okas is a vital part of ensuring our national defense readiness,” the statement said.

“Through these drills, we test our chain of command and rapid response capabilities.”

The reservists, drawn from the Engineer Battalion (1st Infantry Brigade) and the Air Defence Battery (Estonian Division), will engage in defensive operations. The Engineer Battalion’s participants will operate under a flexible schedule, with permissions to leave their posts but remain on call. Meanwhile, the Air Defence Battery’s reservists will participate from Dec. 3 to Dec. 8.

Participants can check their call-up orders at www.kaitsevaeteenistus.ee or contact the Defense Resources Agency for more information via phone at +372 8002525 or email at info@kra.ee.

“This exercise is crucial for maintaining the efficiency of Estonia’s reserve-based defense model,” said the Estonian Defence Forces.

“Security doesn’t happen by itself; it requires consistent effort and practice.”

The government emphasizes the importance of regular drills, such as “Siil” (Hedgehog) and “Kevadtorm” (Spring Storm), to keep its defense forces ready.

A previous Okas exercise was conducted in October 2024.
