EIB Provides Over €60 Million for Ukraine’s Road and Public Transport Recovery

KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — The European Investment Bank (EIB) has allocated more than €60 million in EU-guaranteed funding to support critical infrastructure reconstruction and urban transport renewal in Ukraine, officials announced Friday.

The funding, part of the EIB’s Ukraine Solidarity Urgent Response package, includes €43.48 million to rebuild war-damaged sections of the M01 highway and €17.25 million for upgrading public transport systems in Kyiv, Odesa, and Sumy.

“The European Investment Bank remains steadfast in its commitment to supporting Ukraine’s recovery and resilience,” EIB Vice-President Teresa Czerwińska said in a statement. “These investments not only restore vital transport links but also provide tangible support to the daily lives of Ukrainians, ensuring mobility, safety, and economic connectivity.”

The M01 highway, a critical transportation corridor linking Kyiv to Chernihiv and the northern border, suffered extensive damage during the early stages of Russia’s invasion in 2022. The planned reconstruction under the European Roads Ukraine II project will enhance safety and improve connectivity for domestic and international trade, officials said.

Meanwhile, urban transport funding will enable cities to purchase buses, trolleybuses, and trams, alongside spare parts and maintenance equipment. The upgrades aim to meet EU standards for reliable and efficient public transportation.

“This €60 million in EU-guaranteed EIB funding will help restore critical transport infrastructure affected by the war in Ukraine,” said Valdis Dombrovskis, European Commissioner for Economy and Productivity. “It will make a tangible difference to the daily lives of Ukrainian citizens.”

Since 2022, the EIB has delivered more than €2 billion in financial assistance to Ukraine, reinforcing the EU’s commitment to the country amid ongoing conflict.
