Brussels, (CHATNEWSTV) – The European Union and Switzerland have completed negotiations on a broad package of agreements aimed at enhancing their relationship, according to a press statement released on Friday.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Swiss Confederation President Viola Amherd announced the conclusion of talks, which focus on modernizing key agreements that grant Switzerland access to the EU internal market. The updated package includes agreements on air transport, land transport, free movement of people, conformity assessments, and trade in agricultural products.
“This agreement between the EU and Switzerland reflects the deep ties that have grown between us,” said von der Leyen. “Today marks a new chapter in our partnership as we elevate our cooperation to the next level and modernize the foundation of our strong relationship. This agreement ensures our partnership is fit for the future, enabling both sides to fully harness the potential of our close collaboration.”
In addition to the updates, the new package includes several new agreements, such as those on food safety, health, and electricity. A new financial contribution agreement will further align Switzerland’s role within the EU, and Swiss participation in key EU programs like Horizon Europe and Erasmus+ will be facilitated.
Maroš Šefčovič, the EU’s Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security, emphasized the importance of the deal. “With this remarkable milestone, we have a chance to modernize our relations, to keep them in step with the challenging times, and to unlock their full potential to the clear benefit of both sides,” he said. “As in all negotiations, we needed to strike the right balance—by safeguarding the interests of the European Union while listening carefully to Swiss concerns. I am convinced that this is a positive, balanced deal worth promoting and supporting jointly.”
The negotiations, launched in March 2024 and guided by the Common Understanding agreed in October 2023, culminated in the completion of this significant agreement. The process now moves toward signing and ratification by both parties, with the EU expressing its commitment to ensuring the successful conclusion.
The deal is expected to foster closer cooperation between the EU and Switzerland, allowing for more seamless collaboration in areas ranging from health to energy, and strengthen their shared economic and social ties.
