LAGOS, Nigeria (CHATNEWSTV) — President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Monday declared that his administration will not backtrack on its controversial tax reform bills, despite mounting criticism from Northern leaders.
“The tax reform is here to stay,” Tinubu said during a presidential media chat in Lagos. “The reform is pro-poor, and it is meant to widen the tax net so we can have more people paying.”
The reforms, which aim to restructure Nigeria’s tax framework, have been met with significant pushback, particularly from Northern leaders who argue the measures will deepen poverty in the region.
Tinubu dismissed the concerns, emphasizing the need for decisive leadership. “The hallmark of a good leader is the ability to do what you have to do at the time it ought to be done,” he said.
The president’s comments come as his administration pushes forward with its fiscal agenda, touting the reforms as critical to boosting national revenue and addressing long-standing economic challenges.
