ABUJA, Nigeria (CHATNEWSTV) — The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) detained Joy Enwa, the Accountant-General of Delta State, as part of its investigation into an alleged N1.3 trillion fraud linked to former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa.
Dele Oyewale, spokesperson for the EFCC, confirmed the detention Thursday, adding that Enwa was released after questioning.
“Mrs. Enwa was detained for questioning over the ongoing investigation into the mismanagement of state funds under the former (Okowa) administration. Some other government officials have also been interrogated,” Oyewale said.
Among those questioned were a former director of finance and administration and a senior official from the government house.
The investigation intensified following the November 4 arrest of Okowa, who is accused of diverting N1.3 trillion, including portions of the 13 percent derivation fund intended for oil-producing states. The EFCC also alleges the funds were used to acquire properties in Abuja and Asaba, the Delta State capital.
Okowa has dismissed the allegations, describing his arrest and the probe as “politically motivated.”
