Gov. Adeleke Grants Mercy to 53 Convicts, Citing Constitutional Authority

OSOGBO, Nigeria (CHATNEWSTV) — Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State has extended clemency to 53 convicts across various correctional facilities, exercising his constitutional powers under Section 212 of the Nigerian Constitution.

In a statement released Friday, Adeleke detailed the recommendations of the State Advisory Council on Prerogative of Mercy, leading to the pardons, sentence commutations, and remissions.

“For inmates convicted of simple offenses, I have decided to remit and forgive the remainder of sentences for 30 individuals in whole,” Adeleke said.

Among the beneficiaries, 12 inmates received outright pardons, while six death-row convicts had their sentences commuted to either imprisonment or release. One individual, Ojekunle Timothy, saw his death sentence reduced to 15 years imprisonment after serving over a decade in custody.

The governor highlighted four death-row inmates who were granted outright pardons, including Sunday Morakinyo and Demola Odeyemi.

“This act reflects my commitment to justice tempered with mercy and aligns with constitutional provisions,” Adeleke added.
