Nigeria Issues Travel Advisory for Australia Amid Rising Hate Crimes

ABUJA, Nigeria (CHATNEWSTV) — The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued a travel advisory urging Nigerians planning to visit Australia to exercise caution, citing a surge in incidents of harassment and discrimination against foreigners in the country.

Kimiebi Ebienfa, the ministry’s spokesperson, said Tuesday that there has been a troubling rise in antisemitic and Islamophobic hate crimes across several Australian cities, posing potential risks to travelers.

“While Australia is renowned for its multiculturalism and tolerance, recent events have underscored a troubling increase in hate-driven incidents, particularly in light of global conflicts and tensions,” the ministry said in a statement.

The advisory highlighted a December 2024 incident in Woollahra, a Sydney suburb, where a car was set ablaze, and anti-Israel graffiti was discovered nearby. Such acts, the ministry said, reflect broader safety concerns and a shifting social climate in some parts of Australia.

Nigerians visiting or residing in the country have been advised to remain vigilant, respect local customs, and adopt measures to ensure their safety amid the rising tensions.

“The unfortunate surge in antisemitic and Islamophobic hate crimes has heightened the risk of violence in certain areas,” the statement said.

“Nigerians are therefore advised to be mindful of the prevailing cultural and social dynamics to ensure their safety and comfort.”

The ministry also urged Nigerian citizens to report any acts of discrimination or harassment to the Nigerian High Commission in Canberra for immediate assistance.

“This is imperative for Nigerian travelers and residents in Australia. Extra vigilance and necessary precautions are strongly recommended,” the ministry added.

Australia, known for its inclusivity, has experienced rising tensions as global conflicts spill over into local communities, the ministry noted. The advisory reflects growing concerns about the safety of foreigners in urban centers increasingly affected by hostility.
