Global Partners Express Deep Concern Over Myanmar’s Escalating Human Rights and Humanitarian Crisis

BRUSSELS (CHATNEWSTV) — In a joint statement released on Monday, the European Union, along with the United States, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Norway, South Korea, Switzerland, Timor-Leste, and the United Kingdom, voiced grave concern over the worsening human rights and humanitarian crisis in Myanmar.

The statement condemns the violent repression of Myanmar’s population by the military regime, which has led to widespread human rights violations, including forced recruitment of children, aerial bombardments, sexual and gender-based violence, and attacks on civilians. “These actions, including the abduction of children and the burning of homes, are deeply troubling,” the joint statement reads.

The statement also highlights the ongoing suffering in Rakhine State, where conflict has intensified, exacerbating the plight of the Rohingya and other communities. The group noted that the Myanmar military’s actions have worsened intercommunal tensions, further endangering civilians. The absence of safe areas for displaced people has led to more than 3.5 million individuals fleeing their homes, while 15 million people now face acute food insecurity.

The coalition urged the Myanmar military and armed groups to de-escalate violence, respect international humanitarian laws, and allow unhindered humanitarian aid access. “We urge all parties to ensure that life-saving assistance can reach those in need, particularly vulnerable groups like women, children, and minorities,” the statement emphasized.

The statement also expressed strong support for ASEAN’s efforts and the UN’s Special Envoy to work towards a peaceful solution, highlighting the importance of genuine, inclusive dialogue to restore democracy in Myanmar.
