Berlin – Eintracht Frankfurt have distanced themselves from a banner that was displayed in the club’s fan block during the 1-0 win at St Pauli Hamburg in the Bundesliga on Saturday.
The banner conveyed a message that could be interpreted as homophobic, the club said in a statement on Sunday.
“Everyone is welcome at Eintracht Frankfurt, regardless of their sexual orientation. We condemn fan banners with anti-queer or homophobic content. That has no place at Eintracht Frankfurt,” club president Mathias Beck said.
St Pauli also criticized the banner.
“Of course, such anti-queer statements are to be condemned and are prohibited by stadium regulations at the Millerntor,” the club said in a statement to the Millernton blog.
According to the blog, the banner showed by Frankfurt fans said “CBD instead of CSD.”
CBD is the acronym for cannabidiol, which is found in cannabis plants, while CSD usually refers to Christopher Street Day, an annual LGBTQ+ celebration and demonstration held in various cities across Europe for the rights of LGBTQ+ people, and against discrimination and exclusion.
