NAIROBI, Kenya (CHATNEWSTV) — The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has announced the postponement of the TotalEnergies CAF African Nations Championship (CHAN), originally scheduled for 2024 in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda, to August 2025.
In a statement on Tuesday, CAF cited the need for additional time to ensure that infrastructure and facilities meet the standards required to host the prestigious tournament.
“Good progress has been made in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda with the construction and upgrading of stadiums, training fields, hotels, hospitals, and other infrastructure,” the organization said in a statement.
“However, our technical and infrastructure experts have advised that more time is necessary to complete these projects.”
CAF President Patrice Motsepe praised the efforts of Kenyan President William Ruto, Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan, and Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni, commending their commitment to the event.
“I am impressed with the ongoing construction and renovations of the football infrastructure and facilities in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda,” Motsepe said.
“I am confident the stadiums, training fields, hotels, hospitals, and other infrastructure will meet CAF standards by August 2025, ensuring a very successful tournament.”
The draw for the championship remains on schedule and will take place in Nairobi on Jan. 15, 2025, at 8 p.m. local time. CAF noted that the exact start date of the rescheduled CHAN will be announced later.
