Dusseldorf – Borussia Dortmund have parted ways with coach Nuri Sahin, the Bundesliga club said in a statement on Wednesday.
Sahin had been walking on thin ice for a while amid a difficult season for Dortmund, and the news comes a day after the 2-1 defeat to Bologna in the Champions League.
That was a fourth defeat to Dortmund in four games so far this year.
“We hold Nuri Sahin and his work in high esteem, wished for a long collaboration and hoped until the very end that we could achieve a sporting turnaround together,” Dortmund managing director Lars Ricken was quoted in the statement.
“However, after four defeats in a row, with just one win from the last nine games and currently tenth in the Bundesliga table, we have unfortunately lost faith that we can still achieve our sporting goals.
“This decision also hurts me personally, but it was unavoidable after the match in Bologna,” Ricken said.
The defeat to Bologna put Dortmund’s chances of qualifying directly to the last 16 at risk.
In the Bundesliga, Dortmund have dropped to 10th after three defeats in three games so far this year. Their away performances in the league have also been very poor, with only one win in nine matches.
Sahin was signed in summer and replaced Edin Terzic. This was the first coaching job for the former Dortmund player.
“Unfortunately, we have not managed to live up to Borussia Dortmund’s sporting ambitions this season at this point in time. I wish this special club all the best,” Sahin said.
Dortmund said that they will announce “soon” who will be in charge of the team in the Bundesliga match against Werder Bremen on Saturday.
