EU, Türkiye Discuss Cooperation on Syria, Gaza, and Ukraine

ANKARA, Türkiye (CHATNEWSTV) — The European Union’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Vice-President, Kaja Kallas, has called for stronger EU-Türkiye cooperation during a joint press conference with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan on Friday.

The meeting addressed key regional challenges, including the crises in Syria, Gaza, and Ukraine.

Kallas extended condolences for the recent hotel fire in Türkiye, expressing solidarity with the Turkish people.

“Türkiye is one of Europeans’ most important partners as a candidate country and a major NATO ally,” she said, emphasizing shared interests despite differences on issues like Cyprus and Russia sanctions compliance.

On Syria, Kallas described the fall of Assad’s regime as a moment of “hope but also many challenges,” adding that the EU is prepared to ease sanctions on Syria if the new government takes positive steps. “Syria’s future runs through Türkiye,” Kallas said, commending Türkiye for hosting Syrian refugees and stressing the importance of creating conditions for their eventual return.

Turning to Gaza, Kallas urged Israelis and Palestinians to uphold a recent ceasefire, calling for sustainable peace. She reaffirmed the EU’s support for the Two-State Solution and pledged increased aid for Gaza’s reconstruction.

On Ukraine, Kallas denounced Russia’s ongoing invasion and reaffirmed the EU’s commitment to Kyiv.

“We have provided over €134 billion to Ukraine, making us Kyiv’s largest backer,” she stated, noting upcoming discussions on strengthening support.

The meeting underscored the EU and Türkiye’s potential for deeper collaboration.

“I look forward to enhancing our relationship even further”

“Our cooperation has so much potential,” Kallas said.
