Berlin – An election campaign event by the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) in the central city of Halle was accompanied by protests on Saturday.
Several hundred demonstrators were on site in the city, a police spokesman told dpa. In total, four protest gatherings have been registered.
Long queues of cars formed around the event’s venue in the city’s exhibition hall before midday. The police were controlling the access points.
A group of black-clad cyclists attempted to reach the site at one point. A dpa reporter witnessed the police forcefully intervening to prevent them from doing so. A police spokesman initially could not provide further details on the incident.
The AfD event features party leaders Alice Weidel and Tino Chrupalla. An audience of 4,500 is expected, with several speakers taking the stage.
